The DVD of Garden State has been sitting inside our DVD cabinet for a month now, and probably due to my hectic schedule, i always fail to watch it. Not until my i caught my brother watching it that I was reminded to do so. the movie was running for more than an hour when i caught it but nevertheless, it was enough to make me fall for it.
Garden State is a story of Andrew Largeman, a lithium dependent waiter cum actor in LA. The death of his paraplegic mother brought him back to his hometown in Garden State after 9 years of being away. There, he came closer in contact with his father, whom he has a frayed relationship with. His psychiatrist dad has kept him in medication to "curb his anger". In Garden State, he meets some of his old friends and other new and interesting characters, like the pathological liar Sam played excellently by Natalie Portman, a bellboy making money by having an underground "peep show" and a couple living in an "infinite abyss".
The movie is moving, funny and brilliant despite its brevity. The script was well written, with catchy one liners and thoughts worth emulating. At one scene, Sam tells Large, "If you cant laugh at yourself, life's gonna seem a whole lotta longer than you like." In this movie, we will see how a person numbed literally and figuratively describes family, love and ultimately, Life.
It also shows a lot about family, with Large's and Sam's having full contrast. Zach Braff, who was the actor playing Large was also the writer and director of the movie. He was successful in mixing the heavy drama with light-hearted comedy. Plus, the soundtrack is outstanding. It featured songs from Coldplay (any movie with a coldplay song is excellent, i noticed), Alex Murdoch, the Shins and Frou Frou (a perfect movie ender).
Since this movie was never shown in the theater, I had to buy a pirated version of it. For the whole P 80 pesos of it, it was worth all the risks of getting caught by Edu MAnzano.
FINAL RATING: LOve it, Love it, Love it.
